New stuff at VCA

In vesper community academy we have new tools... Netbooks, I pod touches, and sleds. We have about 15 sleds, we got 5 cool saucer ones. 2 green little ones with handles, but mr. Whitmore returned the green ones because the handles broke off of them. Then mr. Whitmore saw that the kids loved them so much that he bought 4 more other saucer ones made out of plastic but then all of them but a couple broke and then all we had after that was 2 saucer ones but then he returned them and all that we have left now is plastic roll up ones.

Recently we have gotten new sleds, laptops, and netbooks, and iPod Touches. So far the 5/6 class and the 4th grade class are the only classes to have used them. Some of the kids in the website group are using them to write stories, making blogs, glogs, and other things. The iPods have educational apps and the teachers' websites. They also have websites that will help the students with upcoming projects. All of the students are very excited to start work with the new iPods.

At Vesper Academy we have three new tools here and they are sleds, iPod Touches, and laptops. I am going to talk about the laptops. The laptops have another name and that is the Netbooks. They are black with a B on it which stands for ByteSpeed. They are tiny just like a portable DVD player but it's a computer. No one has used the Netbooks yet. There is a whole bunch of Netbooks in it's case. There's twenty in the case. I can't wait to use one they sound intresting. Today Tuesday, January 4 I am using a iPod Touch to type this story and the only one in my class that's doing this. All the teachers used the schools money to afford all the iPod Touches, sleds, and the Netbooks. They are very special to the teachers because they spent the school money to buy these and if they break you pay for a new one that's why they are very important to the teachers. The End By: Olivia

In 5th and 6th grade we are doing an Indian/Explorer project. All of us got to pick an Indian tribe from Brainpop and research some of these questions... What do they wear? What type of Goverment do they have? What do they make? What do they eat? Where do they live now? Where did they live in the past? What is the Current Population? What languages do they use? After we are done with that we are going to make a map about where an Explorer went (there trail). Then we are going to make it look really old and make it look like they used it.

Sam, Kaitlyn, Alexis, Brad, Clea, and Paige are six kids from Mr. Rogers' 5th/6th grade class. While everybody else in the class has Language Arts, these six kids are reading the book Ruby Holler. For each five chapters they read, they have to answer three questions on Stixy. Stixy is kind of like a giant bulletin board and there are little sticky notes that you can write stuff with on it. When they finish the book they are planning on doing a play on one of the scenes from the book.

More Ways to Add Information to our Website

Last week we embedded a glog into our website that gave visitors a virtual tour of the school. This week some students are visiting Glogster to practice their glogging abilities (this finished glog is posted beneath this post!):

We also looked at three ways to create comic strips online. There are many different websites that allow users to create their own comics, but not too many that are designed for kids. The first one is Make Belief Comix:

The second site - Marvel Super Hero Squad Comics - allows users to create stories using kid versions of their favorite super heroes.

Finally, Toon-Books allows their readers to make new stories starring their favorite characters from Toon-Books graphic novels like Mo & Jo, Stinky, Otto, and Benny & Penny.

Learning at VCA School

We learn a lot at VCA school. We learn about maps and continents in second and third grade at VCA school. In math our school does addition and subtraction. We do music with Mrs. Santora. We sometimes watch musical videos. In gym I like to play football. I play at recess. At school we have to do interesting things.

The Community Curriculum group in charge of making movies and recording our morning announcements are currently learning all that goes into a news broadcast. And what better way to learn about a news broadcast than visiting people who do it for a living?

CARES at Vesper School are really important to us. We use them everyday. I'm going to tell you what they are. Cooperation is working together and not fighting over a toy or what game you want to play.

Assertion is like your having Assertion for someone else.

Responsibility is getting your homework in on time, picking up the eqwitment that you brought out, and being Responsble in your classroom.

Empathy is caring for someone that is hurt, helping other people that need help, and when your done you can help someone with their work.

And the last CARES is Self-Control. Self-Control is the biggest CARES of all and it is being nice and calm not hyper and active. It is also being in control. If you use Self-Control you are being still, calm, and you are listening and following the teacher. And that is all the CARES.

VCA Recess

Everybody is playing at recess. All the students at VCA play at recess. They play games and jump rope and play by trees. Recess is after lunch. They play outside to get the ants out of their pants. The kids play nicely and are careful and have fun and play fair.

The 2nd and 3rd graders are working on Maps

Projects start after recess. We were in the library looking up maps on the Internet and we wrote it on a piece of paper, then we went to our classroom and copied off our paper and wrote it in our note book. We did learn more about maps and it was awesome.

Read To Self

Mrs. Sturdy's 2nd and 3rd grade has been working on Read To Self. Read To Self time is in the morning after read aloud and a reading lesson. People are sitting on beanbags, under tables, on the recliner, and at their seats. We read because it is fun. I read the first three books of Deltora Quest!

2nd and 3rd Graders Learning About Maps

The 2nd and 3rd graders have been working on a project about maps. They have been working in the computer lab at VCA and at their classroom. They've been working on this for about a month already and will probably be working on this for another month or two. The 2nd and 3rd graders are leaning about this project so they know what maps are. They have been working on scripts and typing them up on the computers. They are typing it on Microsoft Office Word Documents. They are doing good so far but have a lot to go.

This is the Community Curriculum Website Group. There are 2nd - 5th graders in this group. Gibson, Wyler, Nathan, Samantha, Ethan, and Isaac are learning how to write and format a story for the website. The 2nd and 3rd graders are using a planning sheet to write their stories and drawing a picture to go along with the stories.

The Surprise Party

The morning of Tuesday Sept. 28, 2010, Mr. Rogers’ 5th and 6th graders put their plan of having a surprise party into action. Mrs. Sturdy distracted Mr. Rogers from 8:15 until the buses arrived in the morning. Meanwhile, Kaitlyn (6th), Alexis (6th), Celeste (6th) Victoria (5th), Paige (5th), Kayla (5th), and Krystal (Paige's mom), decorated the room and hurried the students into the room as they arrived. They made Mr. Rogers a birthday hat and brought in cupcakes, brownies, and ice cream as a treat!!!

Wood County Flooding

Vesper Community Academy is in central Wisconsin, between Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, and Marshfield. Over the last two days areas around us have received anywhere from 4 to 7 inches of rain, and there has been extensive flooding. Numerous roads have been washed out, schools near us in Pittsville have been closed, and yesterday VCA's afternoon 4-year-old kindergarten was cancelled.

The flooding in the school's immediate area didn't cause significant damage, but Hemlock Creek runs through Vesper, and it certainly flooded. Mr. Whitmore asked me to post some photos I took of Hemlock Creek. These were taken about a mile downstream, where the creek crosses Spruce Road outside of Vesper.

The first pictures were taken around 6:00 pm on Thursday, September 23, 2010. The second photographs were taken from the same locations at 7:00 am on Friday, September 24, 2010. According to the people who live where the photos were taken, Thursday evening was the crest of the flood. (Note: This post was originally written on Friday, September 24, but wasn't published until today, October 2, due to problems with uploading images.)

Outdoor Education Group in the Garden

Today we went to see what the Outdoor Education group was doing. They were going out into the garden to count how many squash they had. Then they were going to see how long those squash would last in our school lunches.

Next week the group is going to take soil samples of the soil in the garden. They will learn how much sand, silt, and loam is in the garden. If it's not good soil or doesn't have the nutrients that the plants need, they will die. Also, some plants grow better in certain types of soil.

At the end of class today the group was going to go on the computers and research a project they are going to do in the winter. When it's winter nothing is growing, so they will have an indoor project to work on. Their teacher said they would be building something. We wonder what that project might be? Maybe the group will tell us next week.

Our First CARES Assembly of the Year

Yesterday, before the kickoff of Community Curriculum, the entire school met for our first CARES assembly. One of the best parts of the meeting was hearing all the ways students and teachers have seen students using their CARES at school. Some great examples included walking quietly and respectfully in the hall, welcoming new students, kindness on the playground, and numerous examples of students helping one another without being asked.

The sixth grade CARES cadets led the meeting. Here are some pictures of our all-school greeting:

The New School Website Team!

The new school website team will design and update the school website as part of VCA's Community Curriculum on Tuesday afternoons because it's cool and to show everybody what students have been doing at VCA. Mr. W is the teacher for the group. The group will be taking pictures, writing stories, doing interviews, making video clips, and posting them all to the website. They are also in charge of how the site looks, from the color of the background to the size of the words on the page.

And this is our first post.

First Day of School

We're back, and judging from the smiles on everyone's faces this morning, we're all excited to be here. Mr. W. went around checking out what's happening in all the classrooms this morning, and here's what he found:

Field Studies at Power's Bluff

Yesterday was an all-school field study day for VCA students. All students in grades 4K - 6 were at Power's Bluff for the afternoon. The day's lessons included Native American history at Power's Bluff (or Skunk Hill), rocks, plants, living/nonliving items, measuring trees, and various searches for items located in the park. Here are some pictures of all that the students did:

Rosco P. Rafter Visits VCA

Students at VCA are currently participating in the Lil' Rafters Reading Program offered by the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. If students meet a specific reading goal, they will receive one complimentary ticket to an upcoming Rafters Game! Today the Rafters' mascot, Rosco P. Rafter, visited VCA. Mr. N and his kindergarten class were honored yesterday, May 13, for achieving two impressive milestones. Renaissance Learning has named Mr. N's class an Accelerated Math Model Classroom. In addition the class has been named an Accelerated Math Master Classroom. Even more impressive, this is the only kindergarten class in the nation to achieve these milestones.

Volunteer Luncheon

Yesterday VCA honored is volunteers with a recognition luncheon. Many volunteers from the community came - parents and family, community experts, guests to VCA, etc. One of our guests was Mr. Justin Loew, the meteorologist from Channel 9 in Wausau. Today he shared a short story on the morning news, including video from the lunch.

Graphic Novel Night

Last night was our Family Reading Night. It was all about graphic novels. First, students and parents got some background knowledge about comics and "sequential art" and lessons on how to read comics. (It was really good for the grown-ups!) :-)

Then kids had a number of options. All the school library's graphic novels were out on tables for browsing. From Boxcar Children to Toon-Books, from classics to moder novels adapted to graphic novel like Artemis Fowl and Alex Rider.

Everyone also was able to "watch" graphic novels on the Smart Board from Toon Books. They have amazingly made all their books available online for FREE! All the books are available at this online reader.

Kids were also able to create their own comics using our ToonDoo Spaces, available from ToonDoo. Here are some examples of what we created:

Lost Student? Just Lost in a Book!

So I'm working with a reader's workshop group today and suddenly realized that I was missing a student. I counted. Then I counted again. One missing. I wandered around the room. No response from students.

Well, all's well that ends well. No students were lost, other than being lost in a book. The "missing" student is the one furthest back, under the counter, behind the box and the book. After I found her and started breathing again, I heard her whisper, "Hey, Mr. W., this book is good."

Yeah, I kind of figured it was.

Update: At the end of today's class period I shared the picture with the whole group. Another girl, not one of the pictured ones, said, "When did you take that picture?" I told her about ten minutes ago. "Today? Really? I didn't know you were taking pictures."

Apparently a few more were lost in their books!

First and Second Grade Mapping Activity

Last Friday students in first and second grade went on a walk through town and completed a map of Vesper. Students were given a blank template of town. Starting at school, they labeled ten important places and a number of streets. Below you can see the original map and a completed map - a bit crinkled, but completed! - followed by the students hard at work and the X that marked the spot for a wonderful surprise that was both icy and creamy!

All About the Eye

The 4th and 5th grade class welcomed Dr. Sternitzky to their class today. He is a local optometrist, or eye doctor, and is a great community expert for our students. The eye is one body part the 4th and 5th graders are studying in their current health project.

Today students learned how the eye works, how to take care of the eyes, and why good eye care is so important. Students were full of questions - from eye surgery to prosthetic eyes to the best part about being an eye doctor.

Beach Day

On Friday, April 9, the Vesper Community Academy C.A.R.E.S. Kids sponsored a Beach Day for the entire school. There were games, picnics, fruit kabobs, and even sunny weather. (The temperature could have been warmer, but it is Wisconsin, so we take what we can get.) Take a look at all the fun:
